Facts & Figures

According to a report released by the Institute for Public Policy Research, titled 'Behind the Screen: the Hidden Life of Youth' found that:

4 out of 5 children aged 5 to 15 have access to the internet at home

57 per cent of children have come across pornography while surfing online

50% of British children have a profile on a social networking site, including 25% of all 8 to 11 year-olds with online access.

These children are too young for Facebook, Bebo and MySpace, which have minimum age limits of 13 or 14, however, many find ways round the age restrictions.

Last summer MySpace detected and deleted 29,000 convicted sex offenders on its service.

Ofcom’s 2006 media audit indicated that around 50% of all parents have some kind of blocking in place to stop their children viewing certain types of websites – but this is only for at-home viewing on computers. The same audit showed that around half of all children in the UK had a games console.

More children are using the internet than ever before. Unfortunately, these children are being targeted by a growing number of pedophiles and other internet threats.
